Ask the Esthetician: How To Wash Your Face!

Cleansing the face seems like such an easy thing to do, but having the proper facial cleansing technique can mean the difference between healthier, clearer skin and exasperating concerns such as acne, inflammation, and enlarged pores. Having a proper home care plan for your skin can also continue the benefits delivered from your Flourish Facials at Zenana Spa and Wellness Center.

Here are a few tips for a proper facial cleanse:

  • Not all soaps are created equal! The skin on your face is different from say, the skin on your armpits or soles of your feet, so a deodorant bar soap that is great for your body can be too harsh and stripping for your face. Also a foaming gel wash that is great for someone with oily skin would be contraindicated for someone with dry, dehydrated skin. Have a look at the end of the article for some cleanser recommendations for different skin types!
  • Don’t overdo it! Cleansing too often can strip the skin of its natural oil barrier and may leave skin dry, scaly, red and irritated. People with dry to normal skin should cleanse their face in the evening to remove dirt, makeup, oil and pollution buildup from the day and simply rinse their face with lukewarm water in the morning, while people with oily skin can benefit from use of a cleanser both at night and in the morning.
  • When cleansing it is not necessary to use a large amount of product.  Wet your face with lukewarm water and massage a dime-sized amount of cleanser into your skin.
  • Massage your cleanser for 30-60 seconds in order to stimulate your blood and lymph system to get much needed oxygen and blood circulating in your face.
  • Use room temperature to just-warmed water. Extreme temperatures shock the skin; using water that is too hot can be drying and exacerbate inflammation or damaged capillaries.
  • Gently pat your skin dry with a clean dry towel.

Following these simple cleansing recommendations can improve the results of your home skin care regimen. No matter how tired or busy you are, make it a point to spend a few minutes on your skin. The results are well worth it.
