Considering Cloth Diapers?

As any new parent knows, brand new babies go through a lot of diapers. Imagine changing 10-12 diapers a day for just 90 days – that’s about 1,000 diapers! With the average age of potty-training at 30 months, the ecological and monetary costs add up quickly. An easy way to save money (and help save the planet) is to cloth diaper
with reusable diapers.

Cloth diapering is now easier than ever, thanks to modernizations like Velcro, flushable diaper liners and diaper sprayers. These aren’t your grandma’s cloth diapers! Imagine having an absorbent, washable diaper that goes onto baby just like a disposable. Then, after changing time, you have a water source right at the toilet with which to rinse the diaper. . .anything yucky can be washed down into the toilet instead of lingering around in the diaper pail to cause odors.

Modern reusable diapers are very convenient, and come in many styles. Most diapers use an absorbent “insert” that either lays flat in the waterproof shell (also called a “wrap” or “cover”) or tucks into a pre-sewn pocket. If the diaper cover isn’t soiled, you get to reuse it without washing – just toss the soiled insert into your diaper pail and re-use the unsoiled outer cover. A pocket diaper is harder to re-use between washings, but is more convenient. Just stuff an insert inside the pocket and toss a stack of diapers into the diaper bag. They’re ready when you need them, and a waterproof tote called a “wetbag” will let you take them home again once they’ve been used.

If you are worried about balancing two to three weekly wash-loads of diaper laundry with your busy schedule, a local diaper service can wash the diapers for you – just purchase some waterproof diaper covers at a local shop like Milagros Boutique, and the diaper service drops off clean and absorbent, prefolded inserts every week. You wash the covers at your leisure, and the diaper service takes away all the soiled inserts.

Cloth diapering has come a long way and is more convenient than ever as well as the most cost effective and environmentally friendly diapering option available. To learn more about the convenience and benefits of cloth diapering, join the experts from Milagros Boutique on Saturday, October 22, 3:00pm – 4:00pm for Cloth Diapering 101.  This class is free, no RSVP is required, and babies are very welcome!
